World One Health Day was observed at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 10 November 2016. The program was organized by the Department of Medicine and Public Health in collaboration with One Health Bangladesh, Relief International-UK, Bangladesh, and the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).
Participants marched on the campus carrying a large banner to raise general awareness, then a seminar and discussion on One Health was held at seminar room of the Faculty of Agriculture. Prof. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahamed, Vice-Chancellor of SAU was present as chief guest. Prof. Dr. Md. Anwarul Haque Beg, Treasurer of SAU, Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Maqsoodul Alam, Principal, SHSMC and Prof. Dr. Meerjady Sabrina Flora, Director of IEDCR were also present as the special guests. M. Nazrul Islam, Country Director, Relief International-UK, Bangladesh, was present as guest of honor. The seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Md. Mufazzal Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Animal Science & Veterinary Medicine, SAU, and coordinated by Dr. K. B. M. Saiful Islam, Chairman, Dept. of Medicine & Public Health.
Two scientific papers were presented by Dr. Md. Abul Kalam, One Health Technical Advisor Bangladesh, and Prof. Dr. Nitish Chandra Debnath, One Health Coordinator, FAO ECTAD, Bangladesh. Speakers said that 75% of the emerging infectious diseases have originated from animals or animal products. One Health looks at the collective health of the humans, animals and their environment to help prevent the next major disease outbreak.
About 300 participants from many educational and research institutions including SAU, SHSMC, Department of Livestock Services, and the Directorate General, Health Services were present. Dr Kamrul Islam, a graduate of the Massey University One Health Epidemiology Fellowship Program was a member of the organizing committee toward organizing the One health day celebration rally followed by seminar and discussion.
